Skyler had been carrying her groceries home (which was a miracle in and of itself because she was rarely home) when the smell first hit her.

She'd nearly gagged right then and there, dropping her groceries to cover her nose and mouth. When the first impact faded, however, Skyler let curiosity get the best of her - and before she knew it she was looking around for the origin of the foul smell, groceries in hand.

The thick, dark smog around the abandoned warehouse was a pretty obvious clue. Skyler inspected the building with watery eyes, or what she could see of it. A big part of the structure seemed to be falling apart, but nothing really explained the fetid scent - or the smog - coming from the broken windows.

Maybe she should check it out?

A couple of minutes later, Skyler was stumbling away from the warehouse, coughing her lungs out and looking decidedly green. "Shit, that wasn't the best of plans, was it?"

The Altaria by her side scoffed, as if saying 'you think?'; he nudged the blonde away from the house and watched as his trainer slumped against a nearby wall, wiping perspiration from her suddenly hot forehead.

A white-ish glow surrounded both trainer and pokémon and a few seconds later, Skyler's usual healthy pallor returned to her. "Thanks, Chorus." She let her head fall back, breathing heavily despite the nearby toxic fumes.

reports have probably skipped the rangers’ radio and selena decides its best to do this herself than to wait.[break][break]

inside the abandoned warehouse, the smog is so bad she can hear barking from another person finding her way from the thickness of fumes. she is just glad she has mariamman with her, the clear smog from her mouth pushes the smoke from their direction. however, its returning volume suggests the source is still inside the building, and unless she’s able to dispose it, the nearby community will not be safe from the toxic.[break][break]

selena follows the sound of coughing until she stumbles upon the blonde and her altaria who are already outside. “i heard you but i thought gastlies were only messing up with us. are you alright?” panting, she takes in a deep breath before continuing, smile etched on her exhausted face. “why did you even have to go inside?”[break][break]

She hadn't seen anyone back in the abandoned building. Truth be told, she hadn't really seen much of anything due to the smog. Had it been reckless of her? Absolutely. Would she do it again? Of course, even if her throat was still convulsing at times with the need to cough.

As such, Skyler was caught by surprise by the sudden appearance of another person coming out of the smoke. The Altaria by her side puffed up in an attempt to be somewhat intimidating. The fluff and his overall cuteness didn't help matters much.

At the mention of ghastlies, Skyler shuddered. "I'm okay," she croaked out, her throat still sore. "I probably shouldn't have gone in there just like that." She took a moment to study the other woman and a small smile bloomed on her lips.

Skyler shrugged her shoulders at the question. "Beats me. It was a horrible idea, but it seemed okay at the time. I just wanted to help." She gestured to the building before resting her hands on her hips. "I mean, look at that. It's a disaster."

A hand suddenly shot out in Selena's direction at the same time that Skyler flashed the woman a lopsided grin. "Skyler Dross, diver and professional hunter."

she clicks her tongue with her response but the gym leader can’t help but smile with her display of courage. so she’s a hunter?[break][break]

she takes the hand and shakes with firmness. “selena. journalist.”[break][break]

it seems the smog worsens at the sound of explosion from the ceiling of the warehouse. fumes are now dispersed from the inside into the surrounding neighborhood. selena makes a mental note to request its demolition as soon as possible. “look, if you want to help, try to follow up on the ranger’s hotline. i’m gonna go back now to check where the explosion comes from.” she leaves without hearing a word from skyler for she believes her words will not stop the woman from following anyway.[break][break]

Skyler blinked in surprise at the mention of the woman - Selene, what a pretty name - being a journalist. What was a journalist, of all things, doing in an abandoned building leaking toxic fumes? True, journalists could be nosy, but wasn't this a bit too much?

The explosion had Skyler's eyes widening, the black/greenish fumes starting to spread outwards. That - that wasn't a good sign, especially if it reached the more populated areas. The blonde couldn't even react to the pink haired woman's words, as she just turned her back on Skyler and started to head back into the building.

There was no way Skyler was staying behind.

She scrambled to follow after Selene and quickly caught up. Her silver eyes eyed the smog with untrusting eyes. Something had to be making all of this smoke - or someone.

"What's a journalist doing in this place?" Curiosity bubbled up to the surface, and Skyler let it have free reign. She was enough of an idiot to just head in, but Selene didn't seem like the type.

The fumes seemed stronger now too, and Skyler felt her eyes water a tiny bit just from the proximity. The closer they got to the ruins, the harder it got not to cough.

the journalist is taken aback at the other lady’s voice approaching her. and then afterwards, she laughs. “isn’t it a journalist’s job to chase danger?” she realizes skyler has probably no idea who she really is—a breath of fresh air from her previous experience, where people are as if stunned by the presence of a lowly gym leader like her.[break][break]

as they get closer into the suspected source, her castform puffs another clean cloud of air to clear the smog. towards the end of the hallway, weezings of various forms hover around the area, securing the entrances of what looks like an administrative office. the explosion, she surmises, might come from the attempt to unlock the door. criminals might be inside the room although their intentions still seem unclear.[break][break]

selena and skyler have a short window before the smog crawls back into their position. she wants them to take action as soon as possible. “now we know what’s causing the smoke, it’s time to use them for our advantage.”[break][break]

Skyler thought about Selena's words as the smog cleared briefly. Was it a journalist's job to chase danger? The captain wasn't given to watching news (she didn't even own a tv and her phone was a beaten up mess) so she couldn't really say. Though she supposed some journalists might go a step further. At this thought her respect for the pink haired woman grew. "Maybe it is. Still, you look pretty calm given the situation."

The hallway gave way to what looked to be an entrance to some sort of office. What made Skyler narrow her eyes were the several Weezing spewing out the very same fumes that surrounded them and had almost gotten Skyler poisoned.

Her hand reached for another pokéball, the small flash revealing a Starmie. The blonde gave Selena a nod and motioned to the Weezing: she'd take care of the pokémon while the other woman tried to get into the offices.

"Knock 'em out!" The whisper was followed by the thud of Weezings being shoved around with PSYCHIC powers. Skyler wasn't sure they were trying to be stealthy, but the breaking of glass as one Weezing was yeeted through a window made that plan moot.

Adrenaline rose in her system, and the grin she sent Selena's way spoke of all sorts of trouble. "Oops."

when selena tells skyler they should use the smog for their advantage, what skyler not-so-subtly is not the first thing she has in mind. a breathe of momentary dismay escapes her gaping mouth before letting out a faint laughter at her partner. “i guess that also works.”[break][break]

the kalosian and castform rushes into the abandoned office to check on the perpetrators working their way inside. the thud from the sailor’s attack provides them a short window before they notice the journalist and her company. selena barges in, replicating the energy from skyler’s previous action as her cloud pokémon blasts the burglars inside with fire. they make an attempt to summon their weezings but realize the poison-types are already taken care of.[break][break]

desperate, they retrieve more smokescreen for their backpockets and unleash the veil of smoke. selena huffs, coughing, but makes an effort to notify skyler from the back. “they are escaping!”[break][break]

Selena barged into the office like a hurricane, the small pokémon that accompanied her unleashing a wave of fire that had the criminals backtracking - and panicking when they realized their own pokémon had been thoroughly taken care of.

Hah! Suckers.

Her delight was cut short by Selena's warning and the following cloud of smoke that exploded out of the office's door. Skyler lost sight of Selena for a moment, the smoke too thick to make heads or tails of what was happening in there.

The sailor wasn't sure there were other exits, but she wasn't about to risk letting those thieves get away (especially after they assaulted her nose, nearly poisoned her AND made her abandon her groceries).

Skyler surged forward into the office, her Pokemon right on her trail. "Chorus, get 'em!" The Altaria puffed up and inhaled deeply before letting out a horrible screeching sound (HYPER VOICE) that had all the nearby windows cracking and shattering. It hurt Skyler a bit seeing as she was right behind Altaria, but not nearly as much as it would whoever was in front of it. The smoke also cleared out nicely, revealing several people decked out in black.

A couple of them were trying to get away through an open vent. Shit.

"Uh, Selena?"

another blow of clear smog rids the fumes surrounding the office and selena is just in time when skyler halts a few running thieves with altaria’s hyper voice.[break][break]

the few ones who escape through the vents, unfortunately, find themselves chased down by macua’s spirit shackle, who comes out of his pokéball at selena’s command. the arrows strike their targets and bind them with ghostly chains into decidueye’s wings.[break][break]

“now, that is quick.” the gym leader pats the owl’s head, eyes darting at skyler and nodding for her to follow.[break][break]

macua leads the two to the vents, advancing while pulling into his supernatural strings. the shackles shake as the avian tugs but their resistance is inferior to the pokémon’s strength.[break][break]

a wicked smile flashes on selena’s face as she looks at skyler. “i think it’s best for the police to find them here like this. what do you say?”[break][break]

The spiritual shackles took Skyler by surprise, as did the sudden appearance of a large owl-like pokémon she didn't recognize. The sailor made sure the criminals in the room were suitably knocked out before following after Selena.

Amusement bubbled up to the surface when she saw the pathetic spectacle before her, and laughter finally spilled out at Selena's words. The following slow smile that curled the edges of her mouth was a mirror of Selena's own. "I think we should. It's not like they're going anywhere."

Now that the Weezing had been dealt with and the criminals were more or less caught, the air inside the building was beginning to finally clear out. Still, the lingering fumes made the blonde scrunch her nose.

Skyler found herself enjoying the company of this pink-haired journalist - she had some spunk. Silvery eyes settled on Selena for a brief moment as the sailor stepped away from the building, inhaling deeply with a sigh of relief. "We should get out of here. I know a place not very far away from here if you feel like having a drink - and tacos."

Honestly, who could say no to tacos?

cerulean eyes brighten up at the sound of tacos as the castform above her also gleams with delight. “i like you, skyler dross. you sure know your way to a woman's heart... or stomach.” she nudges her with a chuckle.[break][break]

the gym leader has already recalled macua and they have escapes the abandoned warehouse already. she takes one final glance at the building as the sound of siren reverberates from a distance. the pinkette wonders why the police always arrives late especially when the matters are already taken off, but that's a problem for another day since she has more on her table right now.[break][break]

selena leads the way for other lady even when she doesn't actually know where they're going. her hands slip through her pockets as she lets out a mischievous grin. “you said it's your treat, right?”[break][break]
